Whoa

There are some good 3D special effects and clever dialogue that includes funny one-liners.

No

It is built around a predictable plot and is not the type of cartoon feature that adults will like as much, if not more, than kids.

Bottom Line

Comedic actor Adam Sandler used to be box office gold. His films that came out during the ’90s and early ’00s were huge hits. And he even successfully tried his hand at drama with 2002’s Punch Drunk Love. But somehow he lost his way and flicks like 2011’s Jack and Jill and 2012’s That’s My Boy which were a true flops. While his obnoxiousness has admittedly grown tiresome, it’s suited to Hotel Transylvania, an animated flick in which he provides the voice for Dracula. Yes, that Dracula. But rather than play Drac as a spooky monster, Sandler hams it up in this family-friendly film.

Distraught after the death of his wife, Dracula builds a castle so deep in the haunted forest that no human could ever find it. He has huge parties with his other monster friends (voiced by the likes of Kevin James, Fran Drescher, Jon Lovitz, Cee Lo Green, Steve Buscemi, and David Spade), he intends to keep his teenage daughter Mavis (Selena Gomez) safe from the outside world. When Jonathan (Andy Samberg), a young human hiker, ends up accidentally happening upon the castle, Dracula has a real problem on his hands because Jon quickly falls for Mavis and Mavis falls for him.
