Lollapalooza 2011: Day Three

Started off with a visit to the Cloud Gate or “The Bean” in Millennium Park and a leisurely lunch at the Park Grill. While the place isn’t particularly cheap, given the Fest’s going rates for libations, we were okay paying $10 for a 32 oz. glass of one of Goose Island’s various microbrews (Summertime, 312, Green Line). And we got a generous helping for hummus for under $10.We arrived at Lollapalooza in time to see Rival Schoolswho delivered a particularly noisy set. A veteran of the hardcore scene, frontman Walter Schreifels exudes positivity while maintaining a punk rock edge. He’s never gotten his due, but that didn’t faze the modest crowd that gathered on the cement in front of the stage in the height of the mid-afternoon heat to check out his set.

You Might Think . .. it’s the Cars, because it is.

From there, we caught a bit of Little Hurricane’s White Stripes-derived set on the Google+ Stage and then went to see alt-country singer Ryan Bingham. He sounded sharp, especially when he “turned up the volume” for “Bluebird.” After that we joined the throngs to hear the Cars, who delivered spot-on renditions of hits such as “Let the Good Times Roll” and “Moving in Stereo”  to a crowd that was largely too young to remember when they were big on the radio. We saw some of Cage the Elephant’s set but when the heavens opened up unleashing not one, but two separate storms on us, we headed for cover over at the Eleven City Diner, a terrific Jewish diner that serves up a mean lemonade-vodka and serves breakfast all day. You can’t go wrong with their French toast.
