Born Ruffians to Release Sixth Album
In advance of the release of their new album, Juice, Toronto-based Born Ruffians will release the new single “Breathe.” To promote the album, singer-guitarist Luke Lalonde is performing live at 8pm ET on Friday, April 3 via the band’s IGTV/Facebook site.
“Similar to our last single ‘Wavy Haze,’ ‘Breathe’ is about our relationship with our own memories — though more focused on the uninvited memories that impose themselves on us at random times,” says Lalonde in a statement. “Sometimes on a bus, I will shudder or audibly gasp because my brain will deliver something I did in grade five and regret terribly. Or sometimes, a nice memory will pop by for a visit. It’s sort of about the battle between the light and the dark in my brain, fighting each other for real estate up there. To quote myself . . . I had a dream love and light were winning. I woke up laughing. I woke up singing.”
Fifteen years into their career, Lalonde, bassist Mitch DeRosier and drummer Steve Hamelin have teamed up to deliver a “hyper, earnest, and affecting collection of rock ’n’ roll songs” that they wrote and polished over a three-year span.
As it’s put in the press release announcing the single and album, “Our collective 21st-century spiritual malaise requires a salve, and Juice offers just that: a sweet, delectable nectar from a band that’s lived longer than most.”
