Martin Gore Gets Cinematic on New Single and EP
A founding member of Depeche Mode who’s released the odd solo effort here and there over the years, songwriter Martin Gore just issued “Howler,” a noisy new single from his forthcoming five-track instrumental EP, The Third Chimpanzee. The album is due out Jan. 29 on Mute.
It’s been five years since Gore released the acclaimed instrumental album MG. In 2017, Depeche Mode released Spirit and the group was recently inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. You can tune into Gore’s influences and favorite acts with his “Escaping 2020” playlist here.
“‘Howler’ was the first track I recorded for The Third Chimpanzee EP,” he says in a press release. “I resynthesized some vocals that almost sounded human, but not quite. That’s why I decided to name the track after a monkey. I thought that would be a good theme to carry on with the rest of the tracks.”
According to the press release on the single and EP, “Howler” paints a “cinematic musical landscape that sounds like a new dawn.”
Gore wrote and produced the track, which he recorded at Electric Ladyboy in Santa Barbara, CA.
The Third Chimpanzee EP is available for pre-order now on CD, limited edition 12” Azure Blue vinyl (which includes an art print) and digital platforms. Artwork is by Pockets Warhol. You can pre-order The Third Chimpanzee here.
